A note from the chair

Dear friends,

Stonington's cultural life depends on the people who show up for it: artists, writers, musicians, volunteers, and neighbors who come to the openings, readings and concerts. The Cultural District Commission's job is to make that life easier to find and easier to join.

What we've been working on:

Gateway signage. Our first Cultural District gateway sign has local support and is now in the state permit process. It will be a new panel on an existing sign pole, matching the signs already there. This pilot will guide the wider wayfinding plan for the Borough and Mystic Bridge.

A sculpture park at the Borough gateway. We're working on early plans for a free public sculpture walk and wetland restoration at Alpha and Trumbull Avenues. We will share more as the planning and funding come together.

Listening to you. Thank you to everyone who answered our "What Is Culture?" poll. You'll find the results in this issue, and they will shape what we do next.

Please join us on November 11 at La Grua for our Poet Laureate event. And read John Groton's recap of the Merrill centennial, a reminder of how deep Stonington's creative roots go.

Ideas, questions and volunteers are always welcome. This is your cultural district. We meet at Borough Hall every second Monday of the month from 5-6pm. All are welcome.

Warmly,
R. Douglass Rice
Chair, Stonington Cultural District Commission
